Mia got to the jailhouse in record time. When she rushed into the sheriff’s office, she found Billy and Dusty sitting at her uncle’s desk, playing chess. They barely glanced up when she stormed into the room.

“Have you lost your mind, Billy?” she yelled. “Why would you have Sheriff Hicks lock up Austin?”

Billy took his time moving his knight before he looked at Mia. “I realize that you were older when we adopted you and you needed more time than the other kids to adjust. But it’s been close to twelve years, honey. I think that’s time enough to call me daddy, don’t you?”

Mia blinked. “Are we really going to have this discussion now?”

“There’s no time like the present.” He nodded at Dusty. “And he’s not Sheriff Hicks to you, he’s your Uncle Dusty. Which explains why he didn’t blink an eye when I asked him to run down Austin Reeves and toss his butt into jail.”

“But why would you do that? It was just a kiss.”

“That’s not what Harley said.” Dusty entered the conversation. He moved his bishop and grinned at Billy. “I got you cornered now.”

Billy studied the board and rubbed his jaw. “Cornered, but not out.” They made a couple more moves before Mia lost all patience and snapped at them.

“Would you quit playing chess and talk to me, Billy!” When Billy lifted an eyebrow at her, she added, “Please . . . Daddy.”

Billy lowered the chess piece he’d just picked up and turned to her. “Now that’s better. What did you want to talk about, Sweet Pea?”

Mia groaned. “I want to talk about why you would have . . . Uncle Dusty arrest Austin Reeves for a kiss.”

The happy twinkle that was normally in her father’s eyes was replaced with a hard gleam. “Because I don’t like the idea of my little girl being toyed with by some hot shot quarterback who’s engaged to another woman. And that’s exactly what the boy was doing. He has to know how you feel about him—hell, the whole town knows how you feel about him. He took advantage of those feelings and then just waltzed out of town pretty as you please. I wasn’t about to let him get away with that. Mr. Austin Reeves needed a lesson in how a gentleman acts.”

Dusty nodded. “But you have to admit that the boy took his medicine without one complaint.”

Billy flexed his hand. “Yes, and my hand still hurts like hell from his rock solid jaw.”

Mia stared at her father. “You hit him?”

“He’s a jock, honey. A good hit is all they understand.”

“Urrrgh!” She whirled around and stomped out of the office and straight down the hall to the jail. She found Austin stretched out on the antique brass bed with a washcloth pressed to his jaw. He didn’t look exactly happy to see her. And she couldn’t very well blame him.

At least the jail wasn’t your typical jail. It looked more like some grandmother’s guest room with the homemade quilt on the bed and the rag rug on the floor.
